<image:caption>Puerto Escondido earned its “Mexican Pipeline” moniker in the 1970s, when draft-dodging tube hunters lingered long enough to recognize Playa Zicatela’s full potential. Once word spread, Newport Beach standouts Billy Pells and Paul Heussenstamm confirmed the rumors of empty perfection. Photo: Tim Bernardy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Sand Overload In Puerto Escondido - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Under healthy, pre-jetty conditions, Playa Zicatela’s shoreline displayed larger and more frequent crescent-shaped embayments. These dynamic “bites” in the beach help generate rip currents and sculpt the shifting sandbars that give the wave its distinctive shape. Photo: Edwin Morales</image:caption>

      <image:title>Updates - Sand Overload In Puerto Escondido</image:title>
<image:caption>The root cause of the Puerto Problem is a small jetty that was built two decades ago to enhance the natural harbor at Bahia Principal. Back in 1998, when local fishermen sought to install the jetty, there was little to no public resistance because Puerto’s fishing economy predated its status as a world class surfing destination, and the risks to the sand balance issue were largely unknown. “During the first few years after the jetty went in, things seemed okay,” recalls Edwin Morales, a prominent local surfer and photographer who was also raised in the region. “We noticed the beach inside the harbor at Principal got a little wider, but that didn’t really bother anyone. It took about five years for us to notice that Zicatela was getting wider too, and about ten years before we realized it was really starting to negatively impact the wave.” Because Puerto sits inside an incredibly active littoral cell fed by two nearby rivers, the Rio Colotepec to the south and the Rio Verde to the north, the jetty became a perfect sediment trap. Each season, sand poured up the beach with long period southerly energy. Instead of continuing its natural journey across the sand profile and toward the canyon’s mouth, it began stacking up against the jetty like grains piling against a dam.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Sand Overload In Puerto Escondido - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>While many surf breaks today struggle with a shortage of sand caused by human intervention, Puerto Escondido faces the opposite problem. Here, human actions have trapped and overloaded the system with sand. The beach has nearly doubled in width over twenty years, diminishing the formation of embayments and sandbars. <image:title>Updates - Sand Overload In Puerto Escondido - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Puerto isn’t lacking surf—there are still plenty of barrels. But the magic windows are fewer and more fragile due to the impacts of excess sand, including longer-lasting rips tearing through the lineup, larger and more persistent backwash, and waves breaking much closer to shore. <image:title>Updates - The Rise and Fall of First Peak, Sebastian Inlet</image:title>
<image:caption>“I was invited to look at the Army Corps of Engineer’s approach and blueprints,” recalls Matt Kechele. “The guy doing the feasibility study reassured us that no work on the footprint of the rocks at the tip of the jetty would take place, so it should not affect First Peak. But they dropped some big rocks to absorb wave energy at the tip. They pretty much bamboozled us.” Those rocks created a damaging sand shoal that altered how waves hit the pier. But the real blow came from the redesign. The new pier was built on top of the old one, with pilings placed outside the originals. Those pilings acted like a filter, weakening the wave energy that once rebounded off the jetty wall. Incoming waves lost force on the way in, and the reflected surge was diminished on the way out.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Updates - Surfing Our Engineered Coasts</image:title>
<image:caption>Trestles is sacred ground in California surf lore — raw coastline, pristine watershed, iconic waves. But the surf here was altered more than 135 years ago. Not by surfers. By railroad engineers. In the 1880s, as the Surf Line railway pushed north from San Diego, a powerful winter storm had shifted river mouths north along their floodplains. The engineers—eager to lay track—froze those rivers in place exactly where they found them. When they reached San Mateo Creek, they pinned the river mouth where it still sits today: Uppers. The southern end of the floodplain—where Lowers now sits—was effectively cut off. From then on, every major sediment loads went to Uppers. Lowers has been living off hand-me-downs ever since.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Updates - Surfing Our Engineered Coasts</image:title>
<image:caption>Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, breaks like Manasquan Inlet in New Jersey owe their very existence to human engineering. From Sandy Hook to Cape May, there are 11 coastal inlets. A hundred years ago all of these inlets were highly dynamic, and would shift regularly with the weather, distributing sand along various parts of Jersey’s shore and barrier islands. But over the past century six have been locked permanently in place, and hardened with jetties on both sides to make for safer passage. While these moves bolstered recreation and commerce in the area, these structures disrupted the natural sand transport. This led to faster erosion, which led to the installation of more jetties, which cut off even more sand transport. To remedy this issue, New Jersey was one of the first states to acknowledge what others are just now waking up to: if man disrupts a natural system, then man needs to own the role of keeping things in balance with his own efforts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Disrupting the Mexican Pipeline - Lately, though, Puerto’s legacy is in trouble. In 1998, a jetty was constructed at the north end of Playa Zicatela beach. While the intent was to create a safer anchorage for local fishing boats—which it did—the structure also came with a price. Now, the jetty catches sand that would otherwise exit the natural sand system, causing the beach to fill in behind the jetty and expand the main beaches to the south. In conjunction with Puerto’s offshore deep water canyon, this natural sand flow was crucial for the wave's formation. The clear effects of all this extra sand has been two-fold. If you just want to hang out on the beach, then sure, you’ll enjoy the extra real estate. But its effect on the world-famous surf break has been negative and unanimously evident.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Returns on Sand in the Palmetto State - And yet… On a national level, when it comes to investing in and protecting this precious resource, it’s wildly underfunded.</image:title>
<image:caption>Out of the 3.4 billion beach visits annually in the US, with annual expenditures of $175 million for beach nourishment—approximately $0.05 is spent on beach nourishment for every beach visit, (with about half of that (($0.025)) funded by the federal government. The other half funded by state/local governments. For perspective, put those 3.4 billion US beach visits up against the 327 million visits to national parks. National parks have a budget of $3.2 billion, and the federal government spends $9.79 for every visit to a national park compared to $0.025 for every beach visitor. Doesn’t take an economics major to see that our beaches (THE main tourist attraction in our nation) could use some love.</image:caption>
